Throughout his career, Winfried Materna has been active in shaping the Ruhr region's economic and political environment. He initially accomplished this goal as a member of the 
IHK Wirtschaftsjunioren and, since 1991, as a full member of the IHK Dortmund general meeting. In January 1997, he was elected President of the IHK Dortmund.
Winfried Materna applies his entrepreneurial experience as an economic advisory committee member at various businesses and through his dedication to his supervisory board mandates at numerous companies.
For many years, he has been a member of socially and culturally active organizations such as the "Lions Club" and the "Dortmund Stiftung", which testifies to his continuous efforts to improve even the "soft" location factors in Westphalia, his chosen home state.
In April 2008, Winfried Materna was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit (1. class) because he has delivered important impulses for the successful economical changes in the region..
