MATERNA Communications Offers Tariffs, Routing and Platforms for Flexible M2M Communication
Trade fair visitors can experience smart metering live - Partnership with Sensor Network specialist ScatterWeb
Dortmund / Berlin / Barcelona, 2009-02-17
The information and telecommunications specialist MATERNA Communications is presenting its expertise in machine-to-machine communication (M2M) at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona: at Stand G01 in Hall 1, together with the provider ScatterWeb located in Berlin, Germany, the company is demonstrating how convenient and efficient the reading of consumption meters can be made by using mobile components. In a special web portal visitors can see all their different types of energy consumption, such as electricity, gas, water and heating, for a freely definable period (www.ener-dat.de).
At the moment there are about 110 million machines worldwide communicating with one another. According to estimates from Harbor Research analysts the number will be 500 million next year. In Europe MATERNA Communications already ranks among the leading providers in the development of server-side M2M applications and operation of them. By the end of 2006, the company gained a market share of 15 per cent in Europe. Owing to the SIM cards and tariff models offered by MATERNA's own mobile subsidiary, vistream, the company is also able to offer individual solutions in an international environment and thus demonstrate a higher level of flexibility than its competitors. On the client side MATERNA Communications collaborates closely with experienced partners who contribute the GSM/UMTS modules and the associated integration, including the software application.
One of those partners is the Berlin company ScatterWeb, a European leader in the market for wireless sensor networks which has innovative smart metering solutions for reading electricity, gas, water and heating meters. ScatterWeb uses, amongst others, local area radio technologies to create meshed networks. These meshed networks contain radio modules which organise their interaction independently and route data streams.
Automated Meter Reading and Customised Evaluation
As a result, for a multiple dwelling with 20 electricity and water meters, for example, the data can be transmitted fully-automated to the utility company. ScatterWeb's evaluation unit reads the meters and transmits the readings by short-range radio to so-called concentrators in the field, which are installed outside the building, for example. From there the data collected is passed on to MATERNA's own computer centre via a vistream mobile telephony link. That is where the customised processing and evaluation of the information takes place. The data is then transferred to the customer's own ERP system. In addition to detailed, fast and reliable transfer of consumption data the solution from ScatterWeb and MATERNA Communications is also ideal for monitoring the meters: if a meter fails to respond or if the data transmitted is always identical, an error message can be sent to the utility company immediately.
As an independent platform operator in the fixed-line network and mobile telephony environment, MATERNA Communications has years of experience in data aggregation and processing the operating statuses of mobile applications. In a M2M environment the company provides solutions for smart metering, signalling, alarm systems and monitoring..
