Federal Employment Agency wins itSMF Award for best IT Service Management Project 2009

MATERNA as Implementation Partner

Dortmund, 2009-12-10

The information technology division at the Federal Employment Agency (BA) has oriented its IT operating processes to the de-facto standard ITIL® (IT Infrastructure Library) and has thus achieved considerable process improvements. The public agency is already reckoning with distinct savings for this year. This achievement has led to the BA Information Technology division receiving the itSMF Award for “Best IT Service Management Project of the Year” from itSMF Deutschland e.V.. MATERNA is the Federal Employment Agency’s consulting and implementation partner and has accompanied the ITIL® project.

In order to standardise the IT operating processes in the BA’s IT-Systemhaus, the agency initiated the ITIL2010 project. This included implementing a total of twelve ITIL® processes step by step. Key performance figures are collected for all the processes so they are transparent and controllable. The IT-Systemhaus operates 170,000 PC workplaces nationwide using these processes. This approach puts the agency at the cutting edge in the public sector.

The technological platform is the BA’s IT Service Management Framework which is based on the ITSM Framework from MATERNA and the Remedy Core System from BMC. As this framework is very flexible, BA was able to set up the tool individually to suit their IT operating processes.

The first of the ITIL® processes to go live was the Configuration Management including a Configuration Management Database (CMDB). MATERNA was an important partner during the implementation of the CMDB. Every day up to 70,000 changed datasets are transferred from the asset database at the BA to the CMDB in the ITSM Framework so as to keep the 2.5 million IT components synchronised.
