New Update for MATERNA's Desktop Virtualisation

Migration to Windows® 7 at the touch of a button

Dortmund, 2009-12-01

IT service provider MATERNA is to launch a revised version of its concept for desktop virtualisation. The new version will enable companies to carry out their migration to Windows® 7 at the touch of a button. Also new is the integrated application virtualisation. The MATERNA solution for the management of virtual desktops automates the entire lifecycle of a virtual machine – from provisioning through to decommissioning. Furthermore, both virtual and physical desktops can be administrated from a uniform, centralized management console – a solution as yet rarely offered by other virtualisation providers.

The concept is based on Citrix and VMware virtualisation technologies, using MATERNA's DX-Union as a management user interface. This concept by MATERNA integrates the different virtualisation technologies, reducing the complexity of the various technologies and simplifying the administrator's task of deploying them. For instance, the administrator adds a new member of staff at the touch of a button, then DX-Union automatically takes care of all the provisioning processes. MATERNA's solution integrates virtual and physical desktops to form a complete desktop scenario.

Migration to Windows® 7 at the touch of a button

Desktops administrated with MATERNA's desktop virtualisation can be equipped quickly and simply with Windows® 7. At the touch of a button, the administrator allocates the new operating system to the desktops from the DX-Union management user interface. As soon as the desktops are rebooted Windows® 7 is ready for use. MATERNA integrates the Citrix provisioning server for the provisioning of the basis images, whilst the virtual desktops are connected with the basis images via DX-Union.

Application virtualisation added

Another new feature is the integration of application virtualisation into the MATERNA concept. In other words applications are hosted centrally on a XenApp server and seamlessly integrated on the virtual desktops. This type of provisioning has the advantage that basis images can also be tailored according to the individual user. For this, DX-Union automatically decides which application is to be provisioned to which user. DX-Union additionally takes care of the management of the virtual desktops, the users and their rights, and the virtualisation platform. The concept also integrates physical desktops that can access applications by means of application virtualisation.

Desktop Virtualisation by MATERNA

The MATERNA solution for desktop virtualisation is a completely new service that allows IT departments to offer their customers virtual desktops. This type of IT service comprises the provisioning, management and operation of desktops – which may be PCs, thin clients, netbooks, notebooks or other mobile end devices. MATERNA also advises companies on how the provisioning of virtual desktops as a service can be put into practice taking into account the available infrastructure components and organisational environment. The concept is based on the market leaders in virtualisation platforms and uses MATERNA's DX-Union as its management user interface. The advantage of DX-Union: it administrates virtual und physical desktops in heterogeneous landscapes from a centralized management user interface. Last but not least: the virtual IT environment also profits from the centralized DX-Union functions, i.e. the administration of users and their rights.
