Dortmund Airport relies on MATERNA „SecureAccess“ solution: improved security by enhanced access control

Improved passenger security and convenience

Dortmund, 2011-07-05

To further improve passenger security and convenience, Dortmund Airport decided to adopt the solution „SecureAccess“ by MATERNA Information & Communications, which allows for electronic control of bording passes.

After a short testing phase MATERNA gave its Secure Access solution to Dortmund airport officially on July 5th, 2011.

All of today’s passengers use boarding passes with integrated barcodes they either printed out on their own PC via Web check-in or which they received on their mobile phone. This trend leads to new requirements on the airport operator side to rearrange access to security-relevant areas on their premises and to guarantee airport passenger service security.

After the passenger’s check-in and baggage registration, he uses his boarding pass to enter the security area via the „SecureAccess Point“. Here, the MATERNA software scans the boarding pass barcode and immediately checks whether the data on the boarding pass represents a valid flight and whether the passenger gains access. Thus, misusage of boarding passes is prevented. The electronic collection of flight data supersedes checking the boarding pass manually.

Improvements in departure organisation

Furthermore, by introducing the new access control system, Dortmund Airport gains a lot of additional information which will help optimizing the departure organisation and, hence, improve the passenger service. For instance, the MATERNA software registers those checked-in passengers who already accessed the departure area. This data helps deciding if passengers on the waiting list can move up quicker; departure delays can thus be avoided. By means of „SecureAccess“, peak times can be analyzed and the airport personnel can be disposed accordingly.

More information for airport passengers

Also, using MATERNA’s „SecureAccess“ contains numerous advantages for the passenger himself: Passing the SecureAccess point, he can be shown personalised information about his flight on a display, e. g. about departure gate changes or possible delays.
