Strong figures for 2016 and an excellent start to the year 2017 confirm their successful business strategy
Dortmund / Germany, 2017.05.02
The Materna-Group, a global IT-company based in Dortmund, Germany, has closed the 2016 financial year with a record turnover. Group turnover reached 223 million Euros (provisional result). That shows Materna has grown 6 percent compared to the previous year’s figures (210 million Euros in 2015). This result is also well above the 1.3 percent market growth in the ITC sector as a whole (source: Bitkom sector association). Materna’s highest growth rates were achieved in projects for the public sector with a plus of 28 percent, projects in the automotive sector with a plus of 11 percent and for consulting services for SAP solutions at 10 percent. Cloud and managed services was another significant growth segment, which amounted to 13 percent of the turnover for the year 2016. The share of turnover achieved outside Germany in 2016 was 15 percent (33 million Euros). Materna advises companies and public administrations on digital transformation and delivers the IT solutions needed to achieve that.
Successful customer projects
Helmut Binder, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at Materna, reports “A new initiative for customer acquisition ran very positively last year and we succeeded in gaining around 100 new customers. All in all, our staff successfully carried out more than 800 projects last year”. Their largest customers include Daimler, Deutsche Post DHL Group, Telefonica, Vodafone and Volkswagen as well as the Informationstechnikzentrum Bund (ITZBund), the central IT provider for federal authorities. The experts at Materna have many years of specialist knowledge in sectors such as automotive, telecommunications, aviation and the public sector. Their turnover in the automotive industry grew by around 11 percent last year. For 2017, the company is also planning on two digit growth in this industrial sector. Materna is already working with seven of the ten leading German companies in the automotive sector.
Another important market segment for Materna is the cloud – making IT resources and applications more agile and efficient. The portfolio ranges from consulting services for cloud transformation and setting up cloud-based IT landscapes, to the management of resources and infrastructures in the cloud (managed cloud services) and the development and operation of cloud-based applications, for example, in Materna’s own data centres. Materna complements this with its own cloud services, such as IT workplace and portal solutions from the cloud.
Successful start to 2017
“We have also got off to a great start in 2017. Our group has already achieved 18 percent more turnover in the first quarter than in the same period last year”, explains Materna’s CEO, Helmut Binder. Once again it was projects with public authorities, for example, where they are digitalizing their procedures and processes, and cloud projects that were the drivers behind this. For the year 2017 as a whole, the management at Materna is planning on significant growth again too. One key factor of success for the year 2017 will also be their highly trained specialist staff. In the previous year Materna strengthened its teams for forward-looking IT topics with around 100 new specialists. And they are planning to increase their personnel even more, both at home and abroad.
In addition to growth in their core German market, international projects will also grow the companies development in the year 2017. Materna is active all around the world as a supplier of software and hardware solutions for automated passenger handling. The solutions are already in operation at 70 airports around the globe. Materna plans to continue expanding this business segment even more. Locations in Toronto in Canada and in Orlando in the USA have already been opened; a location is currently being set up in Singapore as well.
Investment in innovations
At the end of 2016, Materna founded their new Innovation Center. The aim is to pool the evaluation of new technologies in the group here and to develop new offers and business models for Materna. It will also help customers to recognize the use of new technologies for their own business models. Examples include new developments based on blockchain, data science, virtual reality or augmented reality and artificial intelligence. The Innovation Center is set up as a company-wide organisational unit and currently has 25 members of staff; there are already plans to increase this number as well.
