German provider Materna IPS has developed a solution that allows passengers to operate self bag drop units (SBDs) with their smartphone. The new technology, Touchless.Connect, is an effective reaction to the current challenges within the industry caused by the global pandemic which has forced airports and airlines to find viable alternatives.
After more than 30 successful years on the international market for automated passenger handling at airports, on 1 September 2020 the Materna Group will be transferring its aviation brand Intelligent Passenger Solutions (IPS) to form a new autonomous limited company.
Tokyo International Airport (HANEDA), Japan’s fastest growing airport by passenger numbers, has increased its capacities through new terminal extensions. The 4th biggest airport in the world commissioned the Japanese provider Toyo Kanetsu K.K. (TKK) and the German provider Materna IPS (Intelligent Passenger Solutions) with the provision of a unique self bag drop solution at the Terminal 2 international facilities and in Terminal 3.
Materna Group continues its growth trajectory

Materna IPS and MODI once again participated in the Department of Homeland (DHS) Security Science and Technologies (S&T) Biometrics Rally (https://mdtf.org/Rally2019) in the Washington region, in May 2019.
Materna is very satisfied with the first half of 2019. In comparison to the same period in the previous year, turnover for the group has grown by 7.9 percent to 149 million Euros. Adjusted by the effects of the sale of Message Mobile GmbH on 1st April 2019, they have even achieved growth of 9.2 percent. EBIT grew at an above average rate by 34 percent to 14.7 million Euros (previous year 10.9 million Euros). The biggest drivers behind this growth are solutions for the public sector and SAP consulting services for internationally active industrial companies. Recruitment is still working well too: the Materna Group’s total number of staff has topped 2,200 for the first time, with more than 160 additional employees compared to June last year.
Hamburg Airport has written the next chapter of its success story in the field of automated bag drop by extending their self bag drop facility in April 2019. The airport has had a strong focus on delivering convenient and fast passenger handling for many years.
Internationally active IT consulting company Materna Information & Communications SE closed the 2018 business year very successfully with a group turnover amounting to 288.6 million euros. In comparison to the previous year, this represents an increase of 13.5 percent, which has almost exclusively resulted from organic growth.
